The Project "Open Encyclopedia System"

The project participants will develop a standardized web-based open source platform for building and maintaining scientific online encyclopedias, which will be publicly available, free of charge on the internet and accessible worldwide. Its first use cases will be "1914-1918-online. International Encyclopedia of the First World War" and the Online Compendium on German-Greek Entanglements (ComDeG).

The project “Open Encyclopedia System”, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is carried out by the Center for Digital Systems (CeDiS), the Friedrich-Meinecke-Institute (FMI), the Center for Modern Greece (CeMoG), all based at the Freie Universität Berlin, as well as the Bavarian State Library (BSB) in Munich.

The Open Encyclopedia System (OES) will offer a modular open source software system with which editors and users are able to build an online encyclopedia on their own. Tools and workflows for community engagement will be included. Furthermore, we will demonstrate ways of retrieving bibliographic information on particular topics to users.
