OES is a standardized open-source platform for the creation and publication of online reference works in open access. The software is web-based.
OES is developed as a WordPress plugin and is built on the WordPress system architecture. This includes a WordPress installation with a relational database (MySQL) and support for PHP and HTTPS (e.g., via Apache). The software is divided into an editorial management system (provided via the WordPress interface) and a publicly accessible website (implemented as a WordPress theme).
For operating OES, the non-proprietary plugin Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) is required, which enables flexible configuration and structured data entry within the system.
The source code of OES is fully open and available on GitHub. More information about OES on GitHub.
OES supports scholarly publishing in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences through a flexibly extendable system for capturing, editing, and presenting content. The platform is built on WordPress and specifically enhances its functionality with editorial tools, structured data models, semantic linking, and sustainable publishing standards. OES is suitable both for smaller projects and for the creation of large, multilingual online reference works with complex editorial and publication workflows.
In addition, there are further OES modules implemented as standalone WordPress plugins. These optionally provide additional functionalities and visualisations, depending on the needs of the respective reference work.
You can explore the frontend and get an overview of key OES features in a demo application at the following link:

The application showcases a simple online encyclopaedia with a basic frontend.

The OES Manual is a central collection of guides and handbooks for working with the platform. It provides detailed information on the application-specific data model, the available visualisation options, and the use of the editor and other editorial tools. The manual supports teams in setting up, maintaining, and further developing their OES application.
