Launch of the living handbook kalimat

Launch of kalimat, the bilingual living handbook of Arabic literature.

News from Oct 05, 2026

On 1 October 2026, kalimat, the first online handbook for Arabic literature of the pre‑modern and early‑modern periods, was launched in Arabic and English. Kalimat treats both languages as equal languages of scholarly research and offers all platform features bilingually and open access.

The handbook brings together short entries that adapt Arabic literary concepts to contemporary usage and analyse and contextualise them using selected corpora. Kalimat combines research from philology, literary and intellectual history, and cultural studies. The contributions address, among other topics, literary genres and institutions, literary theory, poetics, rhetoric and linguistics, literary ethics (adab), and textual practices. The focus is on the complexity, polysemy and historical mutability of Arabic literary concepts.

Kalimat demonstrates the use of the Open Encyclopedia System (OES) for a bilingual Arabic–English publishing platform in the digital humanities. The software enables the publication and ongoing development of scholarly content in multiple languages and also supports non‑Latin scripts.
